According to many automakers, Bharat NCAP would promote the manufacturing of safe vehicles in India

The impending Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) has been hailed by auto industry heavyweights Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota as a brave move in the right direction for the local sector.

The manufacturers praised the idea while also pointing out that it would motivate the nation to produce safer vehicles.

“We at Mahindra believe it is one of the bold steps by the Ministry of Road Transport and we welcome the implementation of Bharat NCAP,” said Velusamy R, President of Mahindra & Mahindra’s Automotive Technology and Product Development, to PTI.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-82219″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-according-to-many-automakers-bharat-ncap-would-promote-the-manufacturing-of-safe-vehicles-in-india-download-2023-07-17t180835.302.jpg” alt=”” width=”1239″ height=”928″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-according-to-many-automakers-bharat-ncap-would-promote-the-manufacturing-of-safe-vehicles-in-india-download-2023-07-17t180835.302.jpg 259w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-according-to-many-automakers-bharat-ncap-would-promote-the-manufacturing-of-safe-vehicles-in-india-download-2023-07-17t180835.302-150×112.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1239px) 100vw, 1239px” />

According to him, MoRTH’s approach would promote equality and encourage healthy competition among OEMs to provide safer models for Indian consumers.

In order to encourage automakers to keep producing safer vehicles, it is also predicted that the government would provide certain incentives to them. According to Velusamy R, this would motivate OEMs to make their vehicles significantly safer and market them to Indian consumers at competitive costs.

Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs) of Maruti Suzuki India, said that the automaker supports the project.

“In principle, the customer information and empowering the customer through authentic information is always a positive and welcome step, so Maruti Suzuki will support it,” he said.

In a draft notice on the BNCAP, the government suggests giving cars “Star Ratings” depending on how well they do in crash testing.

Beginning on October 1, 2023, the government plans to put the program into effect.

“Bharat-NCAP, in our opinion, is a positive development. While the industry has been actively promoting new benchmark safety standards, customers are also becoming more aware of the need for better safety features, which has given advancements and the introduction of newer norms in the country additional impetus, according to a Toyota Kirloskar Motor spokesperson.

Although the majority of OEMs currently adhere to high standards based on customer preferences, the implementation of B-NCAP will allow even more openness and contribute to the achievement of the highest levels of safety, the spokesman stated.
