As a result of the rising cost of garlic, many families are increasingly skipping the pungent ingredient in their food, according to media reports. In several major cities in Maharashtra, Goa, and Uttar Pradesh, the cost of garlic has skyrocketed, significantly affecting family spending.

According to many media sources, the cost of garlic varies between Rs 500 and Rs 550 per kilogram in Uttar Pradesh. While higher-quality garlic may be purchased in the wholesale market for between Rs. 220 and Rs. 240, retail rates in retail marketplaces throughout the nation can reach up to Rs. 400 per kilogram.

Merchants are blaming last year’s delayed rain for pushing up garlic growing till August. As a consequence, garlic was harvested in January, which caused a deficit in supplies. The harvesting cycle and monsoon have caused a significant increase in prices. With the arrival of the fresh crop in two weeks, traders anticipate a decline in prices.

The Indian Express claimed that the price of garlic was between Rs 300 and Rs 400 per kg in major metro areas, while the Hindu reported that 1 kilogram of high-quality garlic was being sold for Rs 400 at retail outlets in Tiruchi’s Gandhi Market.
