OSIMHEN GETS DRAWN TO NAPOLI

Barcelona was wallowing in ninth place domestically and playing Napoli, who were coached by new coach Francesco Calzona, in their first Champions League knockout match in three years. Barcelona’s constant pressure proved too much for Napoli to handle, as the visitors made a lot of mistakes in passes and lacked creativity when they had the ball.

Lamine Yamal, 16, almost missed early chances to become the youngest scorer in the competition. Robert Lewandowski broke the stalemate in the 60th minute after collecting a ball from Pedri and shooting a powerful shot into the bottom corner, despite Ilkay Gundogan’s failed opportunities for Barcelona.

Victor Osimhen, who had just returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, gave Napoli a much-needed boost with an incredible shot from inside the box. As the second leg takes place in Spain on March 12, the tie is now equally balanced. Both sides had opportunities throughout the whole game, and in stoppage time, Ilkay Gundogan came dangerously close to giving Barcelona the victory, but his effort zipped wide.

“I congratulated the team for rediscovering the will to fight,” Calzona said to Amazon Prime Video Italia, “but we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”

“We had trouble at first, but I thought the side had a great energy. The players sacrificed everything to stay ahead of a formidable foe.”

Porto Shocker Arsenal

On Wednesday, Porto defeated Arsenal 1-0 in a thrilling last-minute match in the Champions League last-16 thanks to a goal from Galeno in stoppage time. The dull match ended in a draw until the Brazilian winger scored a spectacular goal past David Raya in the closing seconds, sending the Estadio Do Dragao supporters into a frenzy of joy.

Arsenal seemed strangely quiet throughout the game, unable to generate a single attempt on goal in what turned out to be a tight encounter, despite their previous offensive brilliance.

Arsenal’s defense stood strong, but they risked losing the match because of their lack of urgency, as Galeno’s late heroics gave Porto the lead going into the second leg on March 12 in London. With seven consecutive Champions League campaigns ending in the round of sixteen, Arsenal must overcome this historical obstacle if they are to make their first quarterfinal appearance since 2010.

When you’re not winning, Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, said, “We had to manage the game better.” “We need to make a few adjustments since we didn’t play with much menace or aggressiveness in the latter third. We’re capable of more.

“If you want to be in the quarter-finals you have to beat your opponent and this is what we will have to do at the Emirates now.”
