During the second Twenty20 International of the just concluded three-match series against Australia at Eden Park in Auckland, the southpaw was injured while maintaining wickets.

It is unclear whether Conway will be ready for selection in the second Test in Christchurch beginning on March 8 since he will seek medical advice in the following days to determine the extent of the injury.

Henry Nicholls has been called up by the Blackcaps to take Conway’s position for the first encounter with the defending World Test champions.

Head coach of New Zealand, Garry Stead, is unhappy by Conway’s injury and understands his importance in the batting order.

In a news statement, Stead said, “It’s disappointing for Devon to be ruled out on the eve of an important match.”

“He’s a class player batting at the top of the order for us and I know he was really looking forward to this series,” he said.

But Stead understands that having Nicholls in the Test team will help the Kiwis. Because of his extensive red-ball expertise, the coach feels that Nicholls “covers a number of positions in the batting order” and may be very beneficial to the home team.

“Having a player of Henry’s caliber at your disposal is fantastic. He covers many spots in our batting order and has a ton of Test experience,” he said.

Test team from New Zealand:

Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young, and Tim Southee (c) are the players on the team.

Australia’s test team:

Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins (c).
